How Business Really Works

Have you ever wondered—

“Why is there not a simple, effective, easy-to-use set of instructions for building a successful business?”

I began asking this question several years ago. I was amazed that such a tool, which would be helpful to millions of businesses, didn't already exist.

Although business owners spend lots of time and energy on their businesses, the unfortunate irony is — they often don't know what actually drives, or limits, their success.

Recognizing the need for a better approach, I decided to create one. This involved identifying the factors responsible for high performance and success — and then reducing these concepts to a simple, yet complete approach for building a successful business.

My findings will transform your understanding of how business really works, and what you must do to improve your business. Among other things, this new approach will help you:

  • Identify and fix what's wrong with your business — By understanding the drivers of high performance, you’ll be able to identify what’s holding your business back, and make the necessary changes to achieve better results.
  • Become a much more effective manager — An understanding of the key performance drivers will allow you to continually assess the needs of your business more effectively, and then take the appropriate steps to improve business success.

What Drives Your Business?

Every business, regardless of its uniqueness, has to effectively manage the same five fundamental factors to be truly successful. These five factors, which drive the performance and success of every business, are briefly described as follows:

Purpose
(Understanding and Articulating Your Company's Purpose) — Purpose is the reason your business exists, and is at the heart of your business' identity. An understanding of your Purpose is the foundation for all other aspects of your business and its operations.
Customers  (Understanding the Basis of Your Relationship with Your Customers, and Delivering on that Promise) — Consider this: What is it that your business provides to its customers, and why should they care? Beyond understanding the basis of this customer relationship, you must continuously create, market, and deliver these products and services that your customers deem valuable enough to purchase.
Workforce  (Managing and Motivating Your Workers) — The performance of your workers is the performance of your business. Therefore, you must create a work environment in which workers are able to achieve, and truly want to achieve, high performance.
Process  (Managing and Improving Business Processes) — Your business processes must be carefully developed and managed to consistently produce the outcomes necessary for your business, and desired by your customers.
Structure  (Establishing and Maintaining an Appropriate Business Structure) — For its effective operation, your business depends on an appropriate organizational structure to (i) support and facilitate value-producing activities, (ii) insure compliance with rules and regulations, and (iii) protect the business from potential loss.

Because these five factors are very tightly interconnected, weakness in any one area will undermine your strengths in the others.

For example, unskilled workers will undermine even the very best marketing; ineffective work processes will undermine even the most talented employees; and so on. It's like a puzzle where the complete picture is revealed only when all the pieces are in the right places. Your business will perform to its full potential only when you can effectively manage all five of these fundamental factors. And that's what I can help you do.

In addition to improving business performance, an understanding of these five factors will also make it simpler and easier for you to carry out your management responsibilities. Once you understand how these five factors drive the performance of your business, you'll never again have to wonder, "What can I do to improve my business, and achieve better results?"
