I'm
John Meyers, the president of Real Goals. Throughout my entire career I've been
working with business owners and their businesses. At various times I've assisted
clients as a CPA, business attorney, and small business consultant.
My background
includes degrees in both accounting and law (University of Kentucky, 1983; University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1986). Following law school, I first worked with
a national accounting firm and then with a couple of law firms handling a wide variety
of business issues. Besides introducing me to lots of different business situations,
this experience alerted me to the fact that many business owners are not getting the
type of help they need to make their businesses completely successful.
In 1993 I started
my own firm in Charlotte, North Carolina with the aim of providing business owners
the kinds of services that would actually help them achieve their goals. These
services were intended to fill the gap between the traditional and more technical
services generally offered by CPAs, attorneys, and other business professionals.
Among other things, these services included helping owners determine their goals,
align their businesses with their goals, and effectively execute their businesses to
achieve their goals. My objective was, and still is, to actually help business
owners achieve the results they desire. In July 2000 I formed Real Goals in
Lexington, Kentucky to continue providing these same kinds of business consulting
services.
My
experience includes working on issues spanning the entire life cycle of a business.
I've assisted clients in the processes of forming, acquiring, operating, developing,
growing, and eventually disposing of businesses.
More
importantly, I recognize the connection between closely held businesses and
the personal lives of the business owners. I'm aware that many business owners
become servants to their businesses and are pushed and pulled in directions that don't
effectively serve their personal desires. I also recognize the challenges of
business co-ownership and how these relationships impact business performance and each
co-owner's quality of life.
These
understandings have led to the "Real Goals" perspective that is the foundation of
this firm. Business owners have a unique opportunity to create for themselves an
enjoyable and rewarding work environment. Too often, this opportunity is missed and
business owners endure a level of frustration that could have been, and should have
been, avoided. Real Goals focuses on helping each client take advantage of this
unique opportunity to achieve his or her particular goals.
As I've worked
with business owners over the years I've found that in many cases the greatest
obstacle preventing owners from achieving their goals is that they simply don't
know how to make their businesses into what they want. Business owners of all types are
looking for simple and straightforward management advice on how to make their
businesses operate better so they can achieve their real goals. Unfortunately, what
business owners tend to find instead is an overwhelming amount of disjointed
information and advice that they have difficulty applying to their own situations,
and which rarely helps them improve their business.
Recognizing this
absence of truly effective management advice, I've developed the Excel Management
Plan. The Excel Management Plan is a simple and strightforward management approach
that shows business owners how to skillfully handle the key activities that drive
the growth and development of their businesses. This management model allows me to
help business owners take the necessary steps to become better managers, and
improve the performance of ther businesses so they can achieve their
goals.
